    Westlawn Summer Reading Buddies

There were only two students and 4 interns today and one other volunteer to help with reading. She took one student and I took the other, a very active boy in 2nd grade who had trouble sitting still. He had trouble finding a book. Initially, one intern tried to help but couldn't find a book on his level and left me alone to find a book with him. I wound up finding only one book he could read himself and read three other books to him and engaged him in some words in those books that I thought he could read. The interns hung out among themselves and didn't offer any help. In retrospect, I wish I had asked them for more help and had offered to stay and organize the lower level books that often have spines too small to label. So, sorting them into baskets or something similar might make it easier for children to find books on their level. Also, having someone there more familiar with the books and their contents to better match books to students' interests would help. Also, after the boy went back to the interns, he ran back and forth down a hall while I wrote on his sheet and the interns stood talking to themselves and the other student, a girl, sat in a chair waited for the next activity. I can imagine they both might not want to come back the rest of the week if they aren't continually engaged.

I read with two of the boys I read with last week. They like to read together - one page each at a time - both are excellent readers. However, today was a little harder because of several difficult proper nouns and other words that do not follow general phonetics and are not common sight words. We talked about that and they were not daunted by them. There were no other children for me to read with, so I left early.

There was only one English reading child for me to work with, a 9-year-old girl. We read four books of increasing difficulty that she read easily and well. I hope to encourage her next time to try even more difficult books until she has a little bit of a challenge. She was shy but opened up quickly and conversed well about what she read showing she had good comprehension as well as the ability to express it.
