About

Would you like to experience the excitement of helping a state legislator during the 2022 legislative session? Do you want to “make a difference” in the lives of people throughout Missouri? If so, an internship in state government is perfect for you!

The Civic Leaders Internship Program awards academic credit to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who serve the State of Missouri through internships in publicly funded offices. Since its inception, the program has placed students like you in numerous offices, including:

  • Office of the Governor;
  • Office of the Lieutenant Governor;
  • Missouri State Senators and Representatives;
  • Attorney General
  • Departments of Social Services, Economic Development and Mental Health; and
  • State and County Public Defenders.

State offices seek interns with various backgrounds and academic majors. They need students with strong analytical skills, those that can effectively communicate, and students that are passionate about social issues.  We have placed, in the past, students majoring in English, Biological Sciences, Agricultural Economics, Psychology, Management, Philosophy, Nursing, Communication, Journalism and Education in part-time and full-time internships.  If you ask a former CLIP intern, they will tell you that this experience is life changing.  It is our job to help you every step of the way.  Not only do we place you in an internship site, but we help you navigate your internship throughout the spring term.

It is recommended that you serve 2 full days if possible. Most students will either serve all day on M/W and put their classes on T/Th or they will put their classes on T/Th and serve all day on M/W.

While you are not required to have a car, you will need to figure out a carpooling situation to Jefferson City, which is 30 miles away. Please note that while we encourage carpooling, we do not arrange transportation.

Parking Details
Students will have access to free parking at the Capitol, but it is about a five minute walk from the Capitol.
