Thank you for your interest in volunteering with hospice. You show your compassion and caring with your request. Not everyone is willing to take that step to find out about this opportunity. Let me give you a few more details about volunteering with hospice.

Most hospice volunteers make visits to hospice patients. These visits are for companionship for the patient, and often provide respite for the caregiver. Respite is used to give the caregiver a break from care giving, and this helps to prevent caregiver burnout. Volunteers find these visits to be very rewarding – providing a place for peaceful reflection for patients and family is a gift the volunteer can give. Visits are usually made 1 -2 times per week for 1 -2 hours. I will work around your schedule when making an assignment for you.

Hospice is utilized by a person who has been given a diagnosis of a life limiting illness. We focus on caring, not curing, by providing emotional support to patient and family members with a team of people. This team includes doctor, nurse, social worker, chaplain, bereavement coordinator and volunteers.

There is a training course provided by First Choice for volunteers, as it is important for volunteers to feel comfortable in this setting. We complete a background check and TB test for you as well. Our next step is to meet and begin training. Maybe a day next week would work for you?

I am happy to answer any other questions you may have, and/or set up a time to begin training. Thanks again for your interest.
